The Reinheitsgebot is very important to biere in the present time. As its names suggests, it is the German act that limits the ingredients in brewing to water, yeast, hops, and malt. It is based on the oldest food regulation of the world, which is today still in strength: The purity requirement of 1516 or German Beer Purity Law as it is known in the states.
A quote from the english translation of the graphic:
Furthermore, we wish to emphasize that in future in all cities, markets and in the country, the only ingredients used for the brewing of beer must be Barley, Hops and Water. Whosoever knowingly disregards or transgresses upon this ordinance, shall be punished by the Court authorities’ confiscating such barrels of beer, without fail (Yeast has been added to Reinheitsgebot since the original law came out)
When you drink beer from Germany, you know what exactly is in your beer, which I love…maybe we will see the present craft beer movement mark the ingredients of their biere on the bottle…why not?
